Varsity Model

Concept

Varsity is a combination of three Sydney-based University Touch clubs:

  • Sydney University (USYD)
  • Macquarie University (MQ)
  • University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)

Following the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) legislation by the Federal Government in late 2005, the financial futures of all University sporting clubs is unassured. With this in mind, key members from USYD and MQ met to discuss the possibility of working together for the long term good of each club.

While UTS do not currently have an existing affiliation relationship with New South Wales Touch Association (NSWTA), it was seen as important to have them involved. UTS and USYD are geographically close together, and have an ongoing association with each other through UTS's participation in the USYD park competition.

While Varsity will sit hierarchically above each of the three clubs, each club will continue to handle their own domestic affairs and finances. To conduct it's business, Varsity will require some funding which will come in the form of a membership fee from each stakeholder.

As the higher body, Varsity will be the vehicle for the elite arm of the clubs by entering representative teams into tournaments conducted under the auspices of the NSWTA. In this regard, Varsity will maintain the relationship of "affiliate" with NSWTA.

Varsity shall then commission the member University clubs to conduct satellite competitions on it's behalf. These competitions will be branded with the identity of the club responsible for conducting it to their respective player bases.
